Popcorns Baby Sweater and Blanket, Free Crochet Pattern

Here is a baby sweater and blanket with lots of popcorns that are so much fun to make!

The sweater is made in one piece. Crocheting starts at the bottom of the front and ends at the bottom of the back. The front has an opening with a small button.

Popcorn Newborn Sweater and Blanket Crochet Pattern

These patterns are written using the US crochet terminology. 

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Size: newborn, about 16 inches around the chest

Materials:

US hook size E/4 (3.5 MM)

Light weight 100% acrylic yarn, about 300 yards

I used Bernat Baby Sport

Small button

Gauge: in first row, 9 dc = 2 inches; 2 rows = 1 inch in height

Abbreviations and special stitches:

ch chain

sl st slip stich

sc single crochet

dc double crochet

popcorn: 5 dc in next dc, drop st from hook, insert hook front to back through 1st dc of dc-5 group and draw loop through, ch 1.

* * instructions between asterisks should be repeated as many times as there are stitches to accommodate them.

Sweater

Work starts at the bottom of the Front, works up to the shoulders, and continues down the Back.

Cut a strand of yarn about 40 inches long; keep it ready.

Front. Starting at bottom. Ch 36 loosely.

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped 3 ch count as 1st dc), dc in each ch across. (34 dc)

Row 2: ch 3, turn (counts as 1st dc here and in every row), dc in next 2 dc, *popcorn in next dc, dc in next 2 dc* across, dc in last dc.

Row 3: ch 3, turn; dc in each dc and popcorn across. (34 dc)

Rows 4: same as Row 2.

Rows 5: same as Row 3.

Rows 6-11: ch 3, dc in each dc across. (34 dc)

Ch 18, drop this strand of yarn. Attach the strand of yarn you cut off to the opposite side and ch 16 (other sleeve). Break off.

Row 12: Pick up yarn at opposite side, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across (16 dc), dc in each dc (34 dc), dc in each ch across (16 dc). (66 dc total)

Row 13-16: ch 3, turn, dc in next 32 dc. (33 dc)

Row 17-20: ch 3, turn, dc in next 24 dc. (33 dc)

Fasten off. Attach yarn to the neck opening and work the opposite side to correspond.

Ch 16, join with sl st to the other side of neck opening. Fasten off.

Attach yarn at the right sleeve.

Row 21: ch 3, dc in next 24 dc, dc in each of next 16 ch, dc in next 25 dc. (66 dc)Rows 22-27: ch 3, turn, dc in each dc across. (66 dc)

Fasten off. Attach yarn to 17th dc of the right sleeve.

Row 28: ch 3, dc in next 33 dc. (34 dc)

Rows 29-36: ch 3, turn, dc in each dc across. (34 dc)

Fasten off.

Attach yarn to top right corner of the front neck opening and continue crocheting into ends of rows: (sc, ch 4, sc) in first end of row (this creates a button loop), 2 sc in each end of row down and up the opening, sc evenly around the neck opening; join. Fasten off.

Make the side and sleeve seams. Stitch on a small button.

Blanket

Skill Level: Beginner

Size: approximately 38 by 27 inches

Materials:

US hook size E/4 (3.5 MM)

Light weight 100% acrylic yarn, about 1000 yards

I used Bernat Baby Sport

Gauge: in first row, 9 dc = 2 inches; 2 rows = 1 inch in height; though it's not very important

Ch 106 (multiple of 6, plus 4)

Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped three ch count as 1st dc), dc in each ch across. (104 dc)

Row 2: ch 3, turn (counts as 1st dc here and in following rows), dc in next 3 dc, popcorn in next dc, *dc in next 5 dc, popcorn in next dc* across, end with dc in last 3 dc. (Mark this row as right side).

Row 3 and ALL WRONG SIDE Rows: ch 3, turn, dc in each dc and each popcorn across. (104 dc)

Row 4: ch 3, turn, dc in next 6 dc, *popcorn in next dc, dc in next 5 dc* across, dc in turning ch.

Repeat Rows 2-4 for the pattern until the blanket measures about 36 inches long, ending with Row 3.

Edging:

Round 1: ch1, turn; make a round of sc evenly around, making 3 sc in corner spaces. When working into end of rows, make 2 sc in each end of row. Join round with sl st in 1st sc.

Rounds 2-3: ch 1, sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in corner spaces. Join.

Fasten off.
